Volunteer Support
Urban Corps Charter School strives to supplement student learning with tutoring programs made possible by a variety of partners. We form structured partnerships with organizations and individuals who assist the program on a regular basis.
Our partnership with Catholic Charities’ Foster Grandparent Program brings three senior volunteers to the school daily to provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for our students. Our Daily Classroom Volunteers from the Catholic Charities Grandparents program are Grandma Nordina, (at left) GrandmaJuanita, and Grandpa Kenneth.
Through READ/San Diego, volunteers provide additional literacy coaching and one-on-one tutoring in reading and math.
A new “Ask a Nurse” program started last year brings a nurse from North Central Public Health Center to our campus once a month, and we have partnered with La Maestra Health Center and the San Diego Health and Human Services for free flu shots.
Volunteers from the Council of Philippine American Organizations provide youth with free income tax assistance.
Volunteers also help provide a variety of career and life skills courses including:
-
Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships Workshop with Teen Health Centers
-
SDSU Nursing Student presentations on drug and alcohol awareness
-
Financial wellness workshops with Money Management International and Mission Federal Credit Union
